The Importance of Rest.
There was a time when I was a young man that worked multiple jobs at a time to make ends meet; I worked at Macaroni Grill, Panera, coached at San Pasqual, was a pastoral associate at my church, and a full-time student.
I took pride in being able to work hard; I took pride in being busy.
In the last couple seasons of my life, I’ve been learning about rest.
For every job done and task completed, there is an equal rest appropriate for the work.
We need physical rest, mental rest, social/emotional rest, and even spiritual rest. Without rest the body begins to struggle and life starts taking on an overwhelming weight.
I could go on and on about what is rest and what is not rest, but, instead, I’ll give you this. If you want to find some rest during our 2 week hiatus…
T.R.E.A.T. yourself.
T- Time with family and friends. Go do something together and make it memorable.
R- Rest and recover. Yes, sleep and plenty of it. (That doesn’t mean play video games through all hours of the night and sleep through the day. Plan your sleep or you’ll always be tired.)
E- Eat good food. Take this how you want. One, eat really, really healthy food or, two, eat the kind of food that makes your mouth water just thinking of it.
A- Always have a water bottle. Part of this comes from the coach in me wanting everyone to come back from break super fit and ready for the grind, but the research also shows that people who are hydrated are also just happier people. So, drink water!
Don't take my word for it. Article 1. Research Article 2.
T- Time to reflect. I remember being a young man and people asking me what I wanted to do after high school. I didn’t know where I wanted to be later in life. Heck, if you told my grade school teachers that I was a teacher, I think many of them would find it amusing. (I know this for a fact because I have stayed in touch with many of them via Facebook.) But, here’s the thing…you can know where you have been and you can remind yourself of the things you have learned so far. Do this and you’ll find yourself ready for the road ahead.
